Our compost bin is a "hot commodity" for a Sewanee
Scientist. She was thrilled to find in it, the right stage of larva,
that will grow into Black Solider flies.
They want to grow them my the thousands in a lab and are collecting
eggs that have been deposited in samples of variegated cardboard. (top left photo)
Eventually, the larva which is made of fat and protein will be
eaten by chickens. The University is aspiring to be self sustaining
with their garden and chicken flock.

Before we bought our land, we had a short list of wants.
Right at the top of list was "a water feature"; stream, pond, lake,
anything larger and more frequent that a puddle.
The hubby and I never discussed why we wanted water, we just knew we did.
There hasn't been a day, when we said, "Heck, what is all the water doing here?"
It's here for a purpose.
Some days, the purpose is solely to sparkle.

Nature comes in all sizes and as bugs go this is a BIG one.
The cicada just left it's shell and was slowly waking up to the world.
Once captured, it was well on it's way to our fishing pond to lure a
large mouth bass. Good eating for the bass.

The unusual name, Fiery Gizzard, was purportedly given to the area by Daniel Boone.
While camped in the area, he overcooked his dinner, which flamed up, giving the gorge and nearby creeks their names.
The hike from Fiery Gizzard Trail from Foster Falls is a 4.7 mile balloon loop. It travels past an impressive 60-foot Foster Falls. Bring your budding Daniel Boones for their close up look at nature. July is a great month to hike in the morning.

I am in love with the Mountain Goat Trail. The first part of it was
completed in the spring of this year. It is paved from Sewanee to
Monteagle. The round trip walk or bike ride is a just shy of 10 miles.
I biked it six times this week. I am clocking in at 65 minutes;
not bad for a senior who previously started her mornings, just sitting on the couch.
When you come to Sewanee bring your bikes or you could rent one at
the local bike shop in Sewanee. They rent them by the hour, half day, day or week.
I suggest a morning outing to enjoy a cool mountain breezes as
you walk thru a paved forest trails. It's Great!!

I love these Discover the Forest ads.
It's firefly season and our forest is full of ferns.
Try this simple test: ask your child what the difference is between a fern and a flower.
Under the age of 10, they may not know, till you show them.
Come unplug this summer at Red Oak Hollow, even if it is only for a couple of days.
It will make the best memories.

Wildlife is a way of life here at Red Oak Hollow. Deer, duck, geese,
fox, birds, possums are out hunting for food to feed their young.
Their little ones grow so fast, that you can literally see a difference within
a week-end. Our mountain is full of wild life, but our estate attracts more
than it's share; due to our natural springs in the woods and the three ponds in the hollow.
You don't have to do a thing to see all the action. Just sit on the porch and rock away in
our red rocking chairs or meander down to the ponds or walk into our woods and sit
quietly in the meditation garden and listen to the life that city life doesn' offer.

A brand new young family of Canadian Geese walked out of the marshy area of the woods. We had no idea they were there. The newcomers kept to one side of the pond while our original pair guarded the food supply. We feed crack corn and it must be pretty tasty.

It's so dang crazy just keeping up with the birthdays around here. First we had seven goslings from our pair of Canadian Geese and sadly they may have only lasted a day. Then we have a eight little Mallard ducklings that we first sighted on Saturday. My hubby said he saw the ducklings this morning with out their parents and a few hours later I believe the ducklings were down at the edge of the pond alone. Oh no, not orphans!. By the time I put on my shoes and grabbed the camera, there were three Canadian Geese at the pond and not ducklings or ducks. Yikes! The geese left and I walked the edges of the pond listing for anything, beside jumping frogs and fish. I couldn't find a sign of them and just an hour later, the ducklings, their parents and the three geese all came back for lunch.
